It had been a challenging and memorable year for the management and staff of Marymount Kindergarten in 2014. In order to ensure a smooth transition and be familiar with the new premise at Toa Payoh Lorong 8, the management organized a tour for the staff before the big move. Initially, some had different mindsets about the move and were not use to the new routines. Gradually, they adapted and adjusted into the new environment well.
On 2nd Jan 2015, we invited our new batch of parents and children to attend a three-day programme to prepare them for the head start of their children’s learning journey. Teachers organised class activities for the children to enhance bonding. At the same time, the teachers tried to clarify the parents’ concerns and queries to the best of their abilities. This brought more assurance to the parents.
On the third day, parents were encouraged to practise the “disappearing” and “letting go” acts in order for the children to gradually settle into their new learning environment. It was not easy for both parents and children especially when parents saw their children crying and struggling in the classrooms. We are grateful and thankful to the parents for their support and understanding. Subsequently, the children became more independent and settled down without the parents’ accompaniment.
Soon, the children became familiar with the new environment, routines, teachers and classmates. They looked forward to coming to school and engaging in the activities planned by their teachers daily. Slowly, the children were able to perform some of the daily tasks well, such as taking out their communication books, water bottles, snack boxes and placing their own school bags in the cubby holes. They even helped to place their bowls and spoons in the pail after consuming the food.
We are confident that the children will slowly acquire the relevant skills needed through good school and parent partnership. This will definitely benefit the children in their early learning journey and prepare them for their future learning.
