Racial Harmony 2017
Marymount Kindergarten – Racial Harmony Celebration 2017
Racial Harmony Day is celebrated in our school annually in the month of July. The event is to call to mind the 1964 Race Riots, which took place on 21 July 1964, and to show the children the difference between now and what happened in that year.
It represents a day of our kindergarten to reflect on, and celebrate Singapore’s success as a racially harmonious nation and society built on a rich diversity of culture and heritage.
The school assembly and celebration was conceptualised to provide intimate and fun platforms to encourage greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures among young children and adults. All the children, teachers and staff are encouraged to dress in their traditional costumes such as the Eurasian (Formal Clothes, Colourful Portuguese Costumes, Comfortable Sarong), the Indian (Sari, Choli, Punjabi), the Malay (Baju Melayu , Songkok – Male; Selendang, Baju Kurong/Kebaya – Female) and Chinese (Chinese Suite – Male and Cheongsam – Female). The children get to know more about the languages, festival and traditional delicacies of the four races, for Eurasian(English; Christmas; Vindaloo, Sugee Cake, Shepherd’s Pie), Indian (Tamil, Deepavali ,Roti-Prata, Naan, Murtabak, Curry fish head), Malay (Hari Raya Puasa ,Nasi Lemak, Satay, Ketupat, Mee Siam), Chinese (Mandarin, Lunar New Year,Dim Sum, Laksa, Claypot Rice). The children also try ethnic food during their classroom celebration. They understand more about the places of worship such as Church, Hindu Temple, Mosque, and Chinese Temple. Traditional games such as Bola Tins, Five Stones, Chapteh, and Flag Eraser.
In conclusion, the activities teach our Marymount Kindergarten children to respect and celebrate the differences in all people. Learning about different cultural aspects offers new experiences for the children. It also helps them realize that we are all humans, despite differences in how we look or dress, or what we eat or celebrate. Games and activities offer a fun way for young children to learn about the differences and similarities between people and to introduce the concept of diversity (all types of differences such as race, religion, language, traditions, and gender).
May God bless all of you!
